Are Dental Implants Right for You?

March 13, 2015

If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants may be a logical, long term treatment solution. They are also an ideal choice if you have a bridge that needs replacement or poor fitting dentures.

The procedure begins with an implanted titanium post which fuses with your natural bone to become a permanent foundation for the replacement teeth. A connecter (called an abutment) is added to the top of the post which then allows custom made replacement teeth to be permanently placed. Implants can be used for individual teeth, to anchor and replace multiple teeth or support a denture. Recent advancements have allowed for complete fixed replacement of all teeth with less implants.

Bridgework and dentures typically need to be replaced or repaired, often in seven to ten years. Dental implants, properly maintained, are made to last a lifetime. While their initial investment will be greater than other options, implant represent the best long-term value and can be adapted and reused when necessary. They are the ideal option to your own healthy natural teeth. Over time, a face with missing teeth can sag and appear sunken due to bone loss. Dental implants protect the remaining bone structure, helping to retain your natural smile and face shape. Additionally implants increase your eating efficiency to allow your body to access nutrients in the food you eat just like your original teeth. And, unlike bridgework, implants don’t require adjustment to existing healthy teeth.

An increasing number of insurance benefit providers are recognizing the long-term benefits of dental implants and some will consider an allowance request equal to the coverage provided for traditional bridges or dentures.

Dental implants allow you to enjoy eating, speaking, laughing and caring for your teeth in the same way as if they were natural teeth, with no risk of cavities. Plus, no need to keep your teeth in a cup!
